The Operatives are back with another next-gen talent and genre-bending rule breaker with Vancouver’s Ekali. Already known across the Internet with his signature selection of ‘R&Bae’ and anti-gravity bass music for the space age, the producer was snapped up by 2014’s Red Bull Music Academy and has gone from strength-to-strength, locking in a world wide tour, high profile remixes, clocking millions of plays on SoundCloud – and, just casually, has just featured on Drake’s latest album – his production was used on ‘Preach’ featuring PARTYNEXTDOOR. Check out his latest remix for Denzel Curry’s ‘Threatz’, and for an extra antipodean appeal check his lush rework of What So Not’s ‘Gemini’.
Ekali is the solo project of Nathan Shaw, who plays bass in indie rock band Said The Whale when he isn’t holed up in a bedroom or tour bus making beats. First inspired to create electronic music after spending a whole day in the dance tent at Washington’s Sasquatch! Festival. Expect immersive, downcast soundscapes in the grand tradition of Burial, with just a little bit of hip-hop thrown in. Setting himself apart with a real knack for working with vocalists, he’s equally adept at whipping up a banger out of an a cappella or recruiting talented vocalists for his own original songs
