Whether it’s by the clandestine Where?House or the technicoloured Kubik, The Operatives scour the globe to find the most cutting-edge electronic musicians to present to Melbourne for MMW. This year offers no exception, featuring the pioneering DJ SPINN of Chicago’s footwork scene and indomitable founder of Teklife, a long-time Operatives collaborator and lighting-fast-rising-hip-hop talent REMi, Los Angeles’s most soulful selector and Soulection label-head JOE KAY, and one of Australia’s finest home grown producers OISIMA. For the very first time, the Agents behind the collective unite to perform as THE OPERATIVES ENSEMBLE. Together, the line-up spans influences from every corner and genre of music presented for an unforgettable closing party.

As the dizzying rhythms of Chicago footwork have spread across the globe over the last couple of years, DJ SPINN has become one of its primary ambassadors. Alongside his late partner-in-crime DJ RASHAD, the formation of their label and collective Teklife was responsible for bringing the scene that had remained hidden in the backyards and dance halls of Illinois for over fifteen years to a new and eager generation.

Already at the top of his game, it’s hard to believe twenty-three year-old REMI has already carved out a name as the start of a new generation of Australian hip-hop. With his semi tongue-in-cheek braggadocios style, by no means overshadows his lyrical abilities. REMI’s rapping persona is comfortable sitting amongst varying musical backdrops and tempos, and his singing voice is as smooth and catchy as the hooks he sings. Expertly balancing singing and rapping, REMI’s content is highly self referential, littered with pop-cultural mentions and tales of a life equally footed in fantasy as it is reality. With their production skills on point across REMI’s debut album, the mysterious SENSIBLE J & DUTCH will be providing all the beats you can handle.

JOE KAY is the co-founder of Los Angeles’ global phenomenon Soulection, as well as the beloved and softly spoken host of Soulection Radio, with over 145,000 Soundcloud followers as well as live broadcast on the renowned London station Rinse FM. An active DJ in the LA music community and as the head of A&R for Soulection JOE KAY is responsible for digging for the timeless “Sound Of Tomorrow.” A lover of music and a visionary, The Operatives are proud to present his debut Australian appearances.

Capturing emotionally connective electronica with a delicate precision, Adelaide artist OISIMA – Anth Wendt – alongside his unique productions, samples and reworks everyone from Adele to DOOM. Pinning them to his unusual and soothing beats like butterflies to a corkboard, his distinguished and original music, from his debut release Dusk Til Dawn to his latest Goddess EP, has well deservedly garnered him a worldwide reputation as one of Australia’s most talented producers.
