THE OPERATIVES
Already carving out a reputation as one of the most creative and unique producers in the game right now, MR CARMACK has been name checked by the likes of Pharell and DJ Shadow when he’s not busy putting out his prolfic releases. Just last year the Operatives discovered this Hawaii-based producer blurring the distinction between hip-hop and dance music in such a progressive way that has even the most experienced producers scratching their heads. MR. CARMACK, the title of Honolulu based Aaron Carmack, has been taking the instrumental hip-hop world by storm and with featured spots on Los Angeles-based record labels Soulection, Team Supreme and an official release on Mad Decent, he shows no signs of slowing down.
It’s hard to pigeonhole Tasmanian DJ/producer AKOUO (ah-koo-oh) into any one electronic music genre. On one hand, you can hear organic, soul-hop influences in his production for Letters To The Sun’s ‘My Heart ft. 20Syl’ and on the other hand his futuristic, electronic rework of Chet Faker’s ‘Terms & Conditions’ proves AKOUO creative trends are far from linear. Having produced solely for rappers in the past, AKOUO’s recent move toward a solo music career has garnered support from the online music community including blogs HillyDilly, Earmilk, Repeat Button, and have also crept onto the airwaves around the world, from local radio stations FBi and TripleJ to Los Angeles’ KCRW.
Netherlands-based producer GANZ has is an artist who has steamrolled his way through 2013 after his debut EP Purple Cwtch dropped through Plastician‘s Terrorhythm Recordings imprint. After producing dubstep under the name Lephen, he began studying music at The Conservatory in Haarlem and finding a new sound, which combined the soaring synth hooks of dubstep and the swagger of hip-hop, sent just an email demo to LA tastemkers HUHWHATWHERE and was quickly signed under his new alias GANZ. Supported by the likes of Giles Peterson and Flume amongst others, it’s been said his music has injected a dose of electronic-energy into the the maximal hip-hop scence and this is one set you don’t want to miss.
Musical pilgrim and Melbourne native Phoebe Kiddo returns to her hometown to show off her expressive electronica. After graduating with a degree in Sound Art from RMIT and as a participant in Red Bull Music Academy in Barcelona, KIDDO can be found in borrowed studios anywhere from LA to Berlin. Her debut EP Tripping on the Wake of Goodbyes was released through Anenon’s Non-Projects imprint. Her latest release, a full length LP Arefacts of Broken Dreams shows off her unique rhythmic complexity and delicate arrangements and has earned her head-nods from the likes of Alpha Pup and fans from around the world.
