“An accomplished drummer as well as producer, Saginaw’s work has always touched on the intersections between acoustic improvisation and the studio science of electronics” – LONDON IN STEREO

Zach Saginaw, aka Shigeto, Detroit’s multi-faceted jazz-electronic fusionist is heading back down to Australia this February after 2 years away from our shores. Beginning with a set at Perth Festival, Shigeto will be playing a string of shows in Sydney and Melbourne on the back of the release of his first album in four years, The New Monday.
Working at the intersection of IDM, jazz and downtempo, Shigeto’ssignature sound developed parallel to, but separatively from, the LA beat scene. His first EPs Semi-Circle and What We Held On To explored his grandmothers experience from a US internment camp through ambient, beat-driven tracks, using samples of his grandmothers voice. His debut album Full Circle, released on Ghostly International was a culmination of these EPs, employing obsessive field recording and meticulous percussion to create sumptuous instrumental hip-hop.
In the years since, Shigeto’s experience as a musician has only deepened. He has recorded tracks for the Detroit rapper ZelooperZ, and performed with jazz legend Dave Douglass’ High Risk Project.

After stints living and making music in London and New York, a move to Detroit focused his influences for his latest release. The New Monday LP is the result of Shigeto diving into the city’s deep record culture, where the legacy of artists of the past helped him embrace his own contributions. It is Shigeto’s interpretation of Detroit’s rich culture of innovative artistry, done so with respect for the history and to contribute, not disrupt.

Shigeto’s 14th release to date, The New Monday LP is a huge departure from the more spacey, melodic beats of his previous releases, incorporating elements of hip hop, jazz, house and techno. It is Shigeto’s interpretation of Detroit’s rich culture of innovative artistry, but done so with respect for the history and to contribute, not disrupt. Don’t miss your chance to catch a special performance from Shigeto this February.
