Niche Productions and The Operatives are prod to present the return of
Grammy-winning LA native Stephen Bruner – better known as Thundercat – set to lay down his scorching fusion of funk, R&B, psychedelic jazz and hip-hop for his first Australian show in five years.
The virtuoso bassist rose during the first decade of the new millennium as the go-to bassist for a multitude of forward-looking artists traversing electric jazz, punk, R&B, and hip-hop. His nimble, syncopated, groove-heavy basslines have propelled songs by Sa-Ra, Erykah Badu, Flying Lotus, and Kendrick Lamar, some of which have also featured his gentle and sweet vocals. Although his session work is extensive and filled with highlights — he was awarded a Grammy as one of the voices in Kendrick Lamar’s “These Walls” — Thundercat is just as recognized for his adventurous solo output. Albums such as The Golden Age of Apocalypse (2011), Apocalypse (2013), Drunk (2017), and It Is What It Is (2020) (Best Progressive R&B Album at the 63rd GRAMMY Awards) have stretched and bent numerous genres while drawing lyrical inspiration from science fiction, mortality, romantic heartache, and pop culture, especially video games, manga, and anime.
Thundercat’s latest work has seen him branching outside of music, making his television debut with a recurring role as The Modifier in the Star Wars series ‘The Book of Boba Fett,’ and appearing as the face of recent fashion/brand campaigns for Kerwin Frost and Kenny Beats, as well as attending Paris Fashion Week as a guest of Spanish luxury designer LOEWE.
Undoubtedly, Thundercat will deliver his stunning musicianship and whimsical philosophy in equal measure when he arrives. He will be joined by upcoming Naarm based Jazz/Neo-soul artist Emma Volard.
