The Operatives have spent the last thirteen years reshaping the musical landscape in Melbourne, hosting unforgettable parties and tours, putting out fresh releases and solidifying themselves as integral players in Australia’s beat scene. In celebration of their thirteenth year the Operatives are partying in style during this year’s Melbourne Music Week. On Friday November 24 their audience will be treated to a fusion of modern soul, jazz, house, trap and Rnb with the Australian debut of Masego and support sets from Haiku Hands, Silentjay’s Full live band and the Bad Opera All Stars, including Billy Davis, Blasko, Jordan Dennis and Tentendo.
Beloved by industry heavyweights Jazzy Jeff and Kaytranada, Masego is the perfect amalgamation of modern soul, jazz and future beat. Self-described as TrapHouseJazz, Masego is one of the scene’s most exciting players. He is an incomparable performer and a self-taught multi-instrumentalist, dipping in and out of genre and bringing an infectious energy and charisma wherever he goes. Masego’s 2016 record – Loose Thoughts – was received positively by fans and critics alike and perfectly showcases his enviable skills on the saxophone.
“A self-taught saxophonist, pianist, singer, and producer here to give an old soul sound a fresh new take in today’s hip-hop climate.” – Vibe
Just coming off the success of his 2016 mixtape Come Fly With Me, Melbourne’s very own Silentjay – the project of Alejandro Jay Abapo – has been making waves in the Australian beat scene with his funky instrumental beats and jazzy compositions. This performance will see the young Melbourne producer team up with his live band, which includes Hiatus Kaiyote’s Jace XL and enigmatic vocalist Tre Samuels. Haiku Hands – an all-female collective hailing from Melbourne and Sydney – never fail to deliver high energy shows, incorporating impressive production and visuals into a performance that is rich, colourful and eclectic. Made up of Billy Davis, Blasko, Jordan Dennis and Tentendo The Bad Opera All Stars have solidified themselves as one of Melbourne’s most dynamic soul and Rnb acts. A family of talented producers, performers and vocalists, these guys continue to push the boundaries of modern soul
