“10 Questions with Tera Kora”

A member of emerging Dutch collective Studio Koto,  Carribean-inspired producer Tera Kora debuts in Australia with The Operatives. Tera Kora’s soulful, sunshine-filled flips have been recognised by heavyweights such as future beats mafia Soulection. He joins Jenn for a quick chat after a whirlwind tour in Asia.

JC : Best memory on tour so far?

TK : I think the show I played in Seoul, South Korea is one of my favorite memories. The crowd there is just so receptive and open to new shit and the energy is crazy.

JC :  What city/crowd would you like to play for? Best fan moment?

TK : It has always been a dream of mine to play in South Africa. I’ve seen and heard so many good things about Rocking the Daisies festival. I know Soulection went out there to host a stage 2 years ago and some homies of mine played there.

I don’t know how to answer this one haha. It’s still hard for me to even fathom having fans tbh. I just see people who are into my music like family. A couple days ago, when I was in Bali, a friend and I walked into this random pizza place and half into the restaurant, I heard one of the waitresses just yell my name. She seemed shocked to see me and that on it’s own just blew my mind. We ended up chatting for a good bit and became friends.

JC : That’s sick! More of those to come. Who inspires you as a producer?

TK : Someone that really inspires me as a producer is Medasin. I feel like he’s nailed a type of warmth I still aim for in some of my original productions. He’s also an incredible sound designer. I’ve also been loving the productions Matthew Burnett and Jordan Evans have been putting out together.

JC : Dream artists to work with?

TK : Oh man, there’s way too many… Some of my dream artists to work with would have to be JOBA, Smino, Anderson Paak and Daniel Caesar

JC : Favourite Australian artists and producers or you would like to work with?

TK : I’ve been bumping a lot of Manu Crooks lately. Would love to hop in the studio and produce some stuff for him.

  • Swindail has always been a huge inspiration to me, his percussion game is unparalleled. Maybe I’ll see him around somewhere in the next couple days.

JC : Swindail and Manu Crooks are crazy! I forget Swindail is from Sydney.

Who are the Dutch/European producers & artists to look out for?

  • TK : If we’re talking singers y’all gotta get to know Gaidaa man. She’s a Sudanese-Dutch artist whom I’ve had the honor to work with and she’s got some amazing music on the way. Check out her Colors show!

  • And as far as producers go there’s too many to mention… But to name a few, guys like Youp, BnnyHunna, Sim Fane, Meek and Paul Mond are definitely guys you should look out for.

  • JC : Your personal theme song right now?

  • TK : I’ve been bumping Dragonball Durag by Thundercat for the last couple days. The combination of comedy and it actually being a good song is too perfect. Thundercat himself is just a hilarious guy as well. Definitely a dream artist to work with in the future.

JC : Thundercat is a god. Favourite food after a gig?

  • TK : Last week in Indonesia, I’ve just been eating a lot of Nasi Goreng Campur. Its so good. The place I’d order from was called Made’s Warung. Shoutout to them.

JC : Nasi Goreng Campur is actual crack. Any favourite radios?

  • TK : I’ve been really into Konbini radio recently. After doing a mix for them a couple weeks ago I started digging deeper into the other artists who’ve done mixes there like Detroit Swindle. Because of them Ive been listening to alot of House lately. Ben Hauke and Chaos in the CBD being some of my favorites.

JC : Chaos boys are legends! Ok, last one.

Worst nightmare, playing a whole set of song requests only or shopping mall Christmas music?

TK : Definitely shopping mall christmas music. Who likes Christmas anyway? Would rather do a whole set of song requests, but only if all requested tracks are pitbull songs. Dale.

Tera Kora plays at Top Yard this Sunday, 23rd February with Sojugang, IJALE, JVP, Swerv, JPS and Nam.
