‘Brooklyn Loft’ is the final single taken from Emma Volard’s new sophomore album ‘Alibi’; a bold and layered neo-soul track which crosses boundaries to include freaked out fusion guitar improvisation, allowing Volard’s accomplished band to shine. The third single in line after the pulsing 90’s bruk infused ‘Shinin’ and the downtempo head nodding ‘Two Sides’, Brooklyn Loft is the perfect prelude to the sound of the new record, released via The Operatives on Friday 14th June. The new single still encompasses Volard’s intimate lyrical reflections, cementing her as a young figurehead within the Naarm/Melbourne music scene, and is a reflection on the complexities of love and all of its extremities, released on Friday 31st May.

Opening with layers of samples reminiscent of 90’s broken beat and house, the full band joins in at a heart racing pace. Volard’s light and clear vocals glide over the top: a perfect counterpoint, paired with uplifting harmonies. “Maybe it’s lust that’s drowns us out, can’t find a way to let you know. Tampered by feelings seepin’ down. Fear of the weight that love can hold.” Explosive syncopated drums and virtuosic affected guitar soloing takes us to an unexpected moodier place – much like how love can be volatile in its experience. This phenomenon is intentional within the music, and played and received live would very much encourage a dance floor. This effect is woven throughout most of Volard’s compositions, which has seen the band’s shows often sold out with fans ready and waiting to move their bodies. Of the new single Emma reflects, “Brooklyn Loft is a song that grapples with the fear that comes when you surrender to loving someone. Love is both beautiful and ugly, and tender but cruel, and this track goes through the motions of all of that.”

Already a Melbourne music scene veteran, Emma has turned the heads of industry heavyweights such as Gilles Peterson, Jamz Supernova, Thundercat, Corey Henry and Zan Rowe. The sophomore album Alibi sees Emma stepping confidently into their sonic world, expanding further on their already developed introspective reflection and storytelling, as well as pushing the boundaries of the neo-soul, jazz and improvisation fields.
