OISIMA BANDCAMP 01

OISIMA FINAL ARTWORK LOVIN' YOU (1)

The music of Adelaide artist Anth Wendt, who performs and records under the moniker Oisima, is difficult to quantify. Artfully bridging the gap between electronica and jazz, Anth crafts immersive, intricate and emotionally-charged soundscapes that situate him with the best and most exciting producers working in Australia right now.

This is best felt on ‘Lovin’ You Was Easy’, his brand new single that arrives after a year-long hiatus from making music. The track is beautifully arranged, filled by with dreamy, downtempo beats, quiet piano, propulsive horns and the lush, evocative vocals of Sydney-based singer Wallace, which anchor the track. “I saw [Wallace] play a show around the time of writing this song and fell in love with her voice and stage presence” says Anth. Every instrument on the song was played and recorded by Anth himself.

Oisima’s new track is about emerging from a difficult relationship and rediscovering yourself in the process. Of the release the artist states; ‘Lovin’ You Was Easy’ is about reclaiming one’s mind, body and spirit after not being in such a good place. It’s a reflection of the personal journey people take, and how incredible it feels to be on the sunnier side after being in a dark place”

Listening to Oisima’s mediative and meticulous electronic arrangements, one might be surprised to learn that his introduction to music was through blues and folk, with Anth initially playing in various local guitar-based bands in Adelaide. It wasn’t until a friend at university introduced him to Radiohead and Air that he realised he could combine traditional and organic instrumentation more innovatively through electronic music. In 2012, he released his first EP Dusk Till Dawn only six months after opening Ableton for the first time.

He quickly followed it up with 2013 EP Goddess and Goddess Remix Album and released his highly anticipated, full-length debut album Nicaragua Nights in 2015, garnering praise from the likes of Acclaim, Pilerats, Happy and Beat Magazine. Off the back of these celebrated releases, he’s toured with downtempo electronic master Bonobo and French producer St Germain, as well as playing festival slots at Splendour in the Grass, Womadelaide, Big Day Out, and Strawberry Fields.

‘Lovin’ You Was Easy’ is the first taste of Anth’s most ambitious project to date: A forthcoming, yet-to-be titled album recorded completely live in his own studio, with no samples. He was inspired to shift to full live instrumentation after he played a show alongside a thirteen-piece orchestra as apart of Here’s To Now Festival in South Australia. The album will also feature a host of talent including Jimetta Rose, Jace XL, Allysha Joy, Cazeaux Oslo, Nelson Dialect, Tom Scott, Abbey Howlett, plus many more. “The whole album” says Anth, “is an exploration into what was possible for my Oisima sound with full instrumentation and orchestration”.
